Magic, sorcery and witchcraft are among the most common themes of the great medieval Icelandic sagas and poems, the problematic yet vital sources that provide our primary textual evidence for the Viking Age that they claim to describe. Yet despite the consistency of this picture, surprisingly little archaeological or historical research has been done to explore what this may really have meant to the men and women of the time. This book examines the evidence for Old Norse sorcery, looking at its meaning and function, practice and practitioners, and the complicated constructions of gender and sexual identity with which these were underpinned. Combining strong elements of eroticism and aggression, sorcery appears as a fundamental domain of women's power, linking them with the gods, the dead and the future. Their battle spells and combat rituals complement the men's physical acts of fighting, in a supernatural empowerment of the Viking way of life. What emerges is a fundamentally new image of the world in which the Vikings understood themselves to move, in which magic and its implications permeated every aspect of a society permanently geared for war. In this fully revised and expanded second edition, Neil Price takes us with him on a tour through the sights and sounds of this undiscovered country, meeting its human and otherworldly inhabitants, including the Sámi with whom the Norse partly shared this mental landscape. On the way we explore Viking notions of the mind and soul, the fluidity of the boundaries that they drew between humans and animals, and the immense variety of their spiritual beliefs. We find magic in the Vikings' bedrooms and on their battlefields, and we meet the sorcerers themselves through their remarkable burials and the tools of their trade. Combining archaeology, history and literary scholarship with extensive studies of Germanic and circumpolar religion, this multi-award-winning book shows us the Vikings as we have never seen them before.

From everyday apps to complex algorithms, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce white supremacy and deepen social inequity.

Far from a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web, Benjamin argues that automation has the potential to hide, speed, and even deepen discrimination, while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encode inequity by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies, by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions, or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of tool – a technology designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice that is part of the architecture of everyday life.

This illuminating guide into the world of biased bots, altruistic algorithms, and their many entanglements provides conceptual tools to decode tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold, but also the ones we manufacture ourselves.

  • 10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests with Comparative Reading (PrepTests 52-61) (Lsat Series)
Having now taken the test, I can say that the practice tests are what makes this material so useful. Undergoing 10 practice tests takes a lot of time, but it's the best preparation you can give yourself. I recommend just getting through a couple, and then beginning to time yourself to get a rhythm going. Pacing yourself during the LSAT is key, which is why the practice tests are so helpful.
  • Fantastic set of tests for studying for the LSAT. The book includes the tests, scoring chart, answer key, and the answer bubbles (located in the back of the book). The only thing that would be better is if it contained explanations to the test answers, but I'm sure that version would cost much more. Overall this is a great purchase for the price and a must have for anyone looking to take the LSAT especially since these tests are some of the more recent versions.
  • Good review. Always good to have the actual tests to study off of! I would recommend doing an additional section from some other book while doing these preptests though because they only include 4 sections whereas the actual test would have 5 sections.
  • While several services are needed in preparing for law school, these tests are one of the keys to success. Many have said that the biggest enemy in the LSAT is time management. In that sense, I think most students get the most help from practice LSATs where they may time themselves and then go back to see why an answer is actually incorrect--this helps to understand how to choose a "best" answer from many possible solutions.

This manual provides 10 LSAT prep-tests sectioned so that they may be taken individually and then scored. They also include writing section prompts so that LSAT takers can get a little practice on the sorts of things they may be asked to write about. These prep tests, for me, were the most helpful resource in preparing for the LSAT.
  • Even though none of the 10 LSAT preptest books have solution guides, you can easily find that information on the internet from other resources. Just be aware that you might not understand why an answer is correct and you'll have to do a little searching to understand why.
  • Decided to go to law school and the next LSAT's were in a month. I only had four weeks to prepare and had been our of school for a 25 years. No test prep classes were available so I decided to try these books. After a few weeks my averages on the practice tests improved to over 160. If you decide to try these just be sure to review your wrong answers.
  • If you plan on taking the LSAT, this prep series by the official law school admission council will help prepare you. These 10 exams were official tests given in the past. The only issue is that the reading comprehension section has recently been re-formatted so that it contains one passage wherein you compare two different author views on a topic; basically you will have to read two writings by two different authors and compare them. Otherwise these exams are very similar to the ones you'll be taking. I highly recommend because the exams are comparable to the same difficulty and level of logic games, logical reasoning, and reading comprehension that will be on actual LSATs.
  • This is an excellent test prep material. I've used to many products but there is nothing that can compare to the actual tests. I used the whole book and ordered a second one! You won't be sorry. I felt very prepared for the LSAT and much less nervous knowing the exact format, etc. BUY IT.

Paddling Wisconsin pulls together 40 excellent paddling adventures, offering destinations evenly spread throughout the state. The focus is on recreational paddling and so all trips avoid complicated put-ins, portages, and dangerous expert sections, while offering something unique in terms of setting, geology, and wildlife. While most trips involve rivers, there are also a few notable lake paddles that offer scenery and exploration opportunities one won't find anywhere else. Rivers range from the mighty Mississippi to the humble trout-waters of the White River. Each paddle provides a map of the route. Paddle summaries – including the route itself and the character of the waterway at large – are clear and detailed so paddlers will know exactly what toxpect. Quick information makes the logistics of each paddle clear for accurate trip planning and includes explicit directions to landings with GPS coordinates. Short write-ups -- about history, geology, and other attractions – are interspersed throughout the book.
