‘An essential, wondrous WOW of a book’ – Sarah Knight

‘Essential reading’ – Daisy Buchanan

‘Everyone should have this on their bookshelf’ – Lucy-Anne Holmes

It doesn’t matter that you’ve lived in shadows, that you’ve slept through years of your life, that you’ve done things you’re ashamed to admit even to yourself. It doesn’t matter that you’re an anxious, depressed, spaghetti-brained mess with a shouty monster brain that keeps you from conforming to society’s definition of normal.

Beth McColl has been there – sometimes she still is there – but in this book she shares what’s worked for her and what hasn’t, what’s gotten her into trouble and then back out of it again, and what she wishes she’d known from the start
  • How to get through a bad day
  • Questions to ask your doctor
  • The truth about medication
  • Ways to practise self-care and mindfulness
  • What to expect from a partner
  • How to forgive your past self, and so much more…
How to Come Alive Again is a relatable, honest, at times joyous and above all practical guide for anyone who has a mental illness – or anyone who knows and loves someone who does. It’s the basics for mending your life, accepting yourself, changing what doesn’t work, killing the worst of it and learning to live again.

"I would recommend this to literally everyone, to those of us who suffer from depression and anxiety, no matter where you stand on your path to wellness, and to the wider world as well so they can get a peek behind the curtain and perhaps be slightly less insufferable. Personally this book had me catching myself nodding along as it described moments and thoughts that I find myself in from time to time, some uncomfortably familiar and some that just felt good to hear echoed across the globe. As someone neither at the beginning of that long road nor even able to glimpse the end past the horizon, this was a refreshing moment for me, reminding me of all the things I do simply to manage my illness and how I've gone so long doing them that I simply forgot and let that become who I am. To the author, thank you for the reminder, it's time to stop wasting my life"

  • I found this book via some twitter rabbit hole I was on and I’m so glad I did. This book is like self help for those of us who need self help but hate self book. Such an amazing sense of humor related to our humanity. I bought it for my boyfriend and I ended up getting hooked after barely starting to read the introduction. My bf will have to wait.
  • amazing. wish I had several pairs of eyes (like an arachnid) so I could consume this book endlessly with my little peepers.

From a USA Today best-selling author comes a new series set in the beautiful mountain lake town of Jasper Lake, where faith, family, and friends come together in heartwarming, inspiring romances.

Jessa Graff loved her job at the Jasper Lake Chamber of Commerce. She spent her days promoting the town she grew up in and never wanted to leave. When a detour on the nearest highway brought more traffic to town, she was ecstatic to see the influx of visitors, especially one in particular who caught her attention.

Jasper Lake drew in Landon Reeves from the first time he drove through. Its serene, picturesque settings spoke to his weary soul. Life hadn't been the same since his parents came back into his life. His siblings might have forgiven them, but he knew better. It was only a matter of time before they packed up and left again.

When Landon meets Jessa, they share an immediate connection, but as they spend time together, the depths of his childhood wounds surface. Can he overcome the pain of abandonment and see that he was born to love, not leave?

Born to Love Jasper Lake Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Leah Atwood Jennifer Groberg Books Reviews

  • Jessa Graff loves her town of Jasper Lake and her job at the chamber of commerce. What she didn’t like is all the upheaval and drama her family had gone though in the last year. When she meets Landon Reeves, she’s ready for a diversion and some happiness.

Landon has his own family problems. His absent parents have come back, expecting forgiveness for years of neglect, and Landon refuses to listen to their lies. He’s always told himself he would never marry because of their genes within him. But when he meets Jessa, he’s so drawn to her he overlooks his misgivings. Can two hurting people help each other or will they just create more family drama?

This novel had a few mistakes, like “they’re” for “their,” “site” for “sight,” and “Lacy” for “Tanya,” but it’s an enjoyable story. There’re not a lot of problems for the couple, except those coming from their respective families, but that was rather refreshing since I’ve been reading some that are so filled with anguish they’re depressing or hard to read. The ending was especially good, something I’ve found common with this author.
  • Jessa has her dream job, running the Chamber of Commerce in her beautiful Adirondack hometown of Jasper Lake, NY. She isn't looking for a relationship after her last one ended disastrously. Her job and once perfect family are her life. Things change when Landon, a long haul truck driver is detoured by work on the highway into th quaint town. Something draws him to discover the attraction of the area that seems to bustle with vacationers. He heads to the Chamber to learn more about the town, only to meet Jessa, the director. Coming from a far less than perfect family, he's not interested in getting to know the lovely young woman, but there is attraction he can't deny. After all, he's only here because of a detour. He lives in Pennsylvania, and is just passing through. Could it be a rerouting of more than his travel? Maybe it will be the thing that might soften his untrusting heart.
A great story with great characters, you'll want to plan your next vacation with the lovely people of Jasper Lake, and take one of Ms. Atwood's books to curl up with along the Lake!
  • This is the love story of Jessa & Landon. I liked both characters & loved the relationship Landon had with his grandmother who raised him because his parents dropped him & his siblings off to be raised by his grandmother. But this causes him to have problems forgiving his parents. My heart ached for him but forgiveness was the only thing that could heal his heart. I know forgiveness is a process & it is mainly for the forgiver but it can also heal the one forgiven. The author handled it all beautifully. Jessa's family also has heartaches that need healing. It shows how christians fall but GOD still uses His grace. I am sure there will be more about that in the next book which I am looking forward to.
  • I liked the entire story. Wouldn’t change anything. I love a good Christian love story. I don’t believe God condones the explicit language and sex that seems to be everywhere these days. Thanks for a clean story full of love, forgiveness and unwavering hope in God’s goodness.
  • Although this is a sweet love story, the romance was easy with no conflict. The conflict and character growth was in family relationships, leading to forgiveness and redemption. I appreciated that this works well as a standalone even though it is part of a series. And I liked having a truck driver for a hero--I get tired of sports heroes, movie stars, famous singers, billionaire bosses as the heroes.
  • Author Leah Atwood tells another story filled with warmth. Both Landon's and Jesse's family had dramatic issues they were working through. Meeting each other made them realize it was important to work on the issues that could ruin their chances at happiness. They realized with God's help and through prayer, forgiveness would come.
  • This series is one I'll follow for sure. Lovely small town with an awesome boarding house which showcases the characters and family dynamics of the characters. Faith and forgiveness are strong themes here as well.
  • He’s a truck driver and she’s the town information manager. They meet and like each other but so much in each ones past is effecting their lives. Can they work through the challenges together to be the one for each other?

An experienced tech writer fully explains blockchain technology and how it will radically transform the world as we know it in this accessible, reader-friendly, illuminating guide.

What is blockchain? Why does everyone from tech experts to business moguls to philanthropists believe it is a paradigm-shifting technology, bound to revolutionize society as significantly as the internet? Indeed, why is blockchain touted as The Next Everything?

In this deft, fascinating, and easy-to-digest introduction to one of the most important innovations of recent times, Stephen P. Williams answers these questions, revealing how cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are just one example among dozens of transformative applications that this relatively new technology makes possible. He interprets the complexity into digestible anecdotes, metaphors, and straightforward descriptions for readers who don’t know tech, and explains all of blockchain’s most important aspects why this so-called digital ledger is unhackable and unchangeable; how its distributed nature may transfer power from central entities like banks, government, and corporations to ordinary citizens around the world; and what its widespread use will mean for society as a whole.

Taking us on a dazzlingly vivid tour through the systems predicted to soon underpin economics, politics, global trade, science, art, and numerous other aspects of our everyday lives, Blockchain The Next Everything is a truly extraordinary journey into our future.

Blockchain The Next Everything Stephen P Williams 9781982116828 Books Reviews

  • Unlike any other book about blockchain, it’s filled with funny, interesting stories but still let you understand what it is. Clearly explain. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand this technology that we all should learn sooner than later!
  • I keep hearing about “blockchain,” but whenever I try to learn about it, I can’t figure it out. Until now. This book really made me “feel” what blockchain is all about. Now I know that I can talk about it like an intelligent person, and it also gives me some tools for imagining how it might work in my own business. I highly recommend it.
  • Wow! This book beautifully clarified a subject matter that I had long ago dismissed as impossible for me to understand! And- it made it clear why it's so important to understand it. Bravo!
  • Wonderful book for any business minds trying to unpack the potential (and differentiation) of blockchain technologies for innovation and future offerings, Highly recommended.
  • When cyrptocurrency prices shot up in 2017, a flood of books on blockchain and related topics hit the shelves. Some were good, most were rushed and flawed, some were near worthless. This book is in the last category and 18 months too late.

One problem is the author does not understand, or at least never tries to explain, the technology. Of course there is room for books that explain implications of technology without discussing the underlying theory, but this book fails in that as well.

The one aspect the author is clear about is that the blockchain is a ledger. There is lots of material on the history of ledgers, and discussions of how ledgers are useful. For example, one of his major blockchain use cases is land registry in Honduras. There's no doubt that a land ownership ledger is useful. That's precisely the 1858 idea of Robert Torrens, whose system spread rapidly throughout the world. But Torrens Title is not a blockchain in any sense. It's a centralized, unencrypted ledger maintained by the government. All the problems in Honduras could be solved by Torrens.

Now there are reasons why a blockchain could be useful for Honduran land registry, but they are not discussed in the book. They cannot be, because the author has laid none of the groundwork. We might imagine that Hondurans distrustful of the government began their own public, decentralized, encrypted ledger--a blockchain--to record land ownership. They would need no permission, no one could stop them. If enough people used it voluntarily, buyers might start insisting on blockchain title, or at least examining the blockchain for possible title disputes. If so, sellers would have an incentive to obtain and defend blockchain title. If enough people did this for long enough, the blockchain could become the authoritative legal proof of land ownership.

The benefits of the blockchain, as opposed to the simple ledger, is it requires no trusted central authority and no coercion. Once in place, it has strong protections against corruption. These are the things a blockchain book should discuss, not the benefits of a ledger.

The author soon runs out of examples of useful ledgers, but instead of delving deeper into blockchain he starts discussing all kinds of things that are at best tangential. The cryptocurrency bitcoin uses a blockchain, so all digital currencies are topics for discussion, whether or not they use blockchains. Digital currencies are used to finance some distributed autonomous organizations, so those get chapters. Distributed autonomous organizations are pursuing some cool ideas--possibly visionary, possibly deluded--and those make fun topics.

The result of this topic drift is the book resembles a random assortment of feature articles on ideas on blockchain, digital currency, cryptography, game theory and related field that could have been written anytime in the last decade. There's little unifying theme, and the articles themselves are pretty superficial.

I recommend you either find a good book on blockchain that explains the technology and its possible applications, or a good book on implications of trustless pseudonymous value exchange for economics and society.
  • In a very uniquely structured book - mostly a series of topically arranged blurbs/talking points that read like pithy blog posts, WIlliams provides a non-tech person a good overview of blockchain. However, this approach may not be conducive to a novice to this field and the often times poetic. Hyperbolic assertions make it sound like a Powerpoint from corporate meetings. Pithiness, simplified abstractions, and clear examples are what the author is attempting in this book; and it succeeds often enough to sustain a reader's patience and interest. Depth of detail is inconsistent - for example, there are references to ant colonies and swarm theory that the target audience may not be able to relate to. In the end, one gets a reader may actually get a cheery, distorted view of the technology and just some superficial examples - kudos to the author to take a different approach in introducing the topic to tech novices.
  • "Blockchain The Next Everything" (2019 publication; 204 pages) is a non-fiction book by journalist (and NYT contributor) Stephen P. Williams over the new technology phenomenon called blockchain. The author himself admits to not being a scientist, but someone who, by happenstance, has become very interested in the next everything. "I soon became obsessed and dove in. This book is where I've come up for air."

Thankfully the author starts from the assumption that his readers know next-to-nothing, okay maybe outright nothing (like myself), about blockchain technology, and hence need to be educated from the ground up. "Blockchain is a simple technology that, at its most basic, serves as a permanent, unhackable ledger for almost any kind of information you'd like to record. Yet it turns out this simple ledger technology makes an ideal platform for building all sorts of innovative and radically new applications." Except that, in the blockchain universe, "apps" are now called "dapps" (as in distributed apps).

Wonder what this could mean for the internet as we know it? "The Internet, as we know it, becomes less important. It's the Internet of Information. The new, distributed Internet will grow out of this old Internet. Eventually, the new Internet will run off its own devices scattered in blockchains around the world." And so on. The author explains all of this is simple language that is easy to read (but not always easy to grasp for non-techies like myself). Do I believe that blockchain is indeed "the next everything"? Ask me again in 5 years! Regardless, this book makes for interesting reading, even for "tech-dummies" like myself.

The White Stag Audible Audio Edition Kate Seredy Jessica Almasy Listening Library Books Reviews

  • This book came in very good condition. I read it as a child and decided I wanted to read it again to see if I would recommend it to my grandchildren to read. I will recommend it but I think it is more appropriate for 10-12 year olds rather than the current 7 and 5.
  • I enjoyed this book. It's written for a child's reading level, but I have never read it before and I was interested in expanding my library.

This a legend of the ancestry of the Hungarians. Starting with Nimrod all the way to Attila the Hun. The moral of the story gets mixed up, but I really didn't see this as your typical "good vs. evil" or Aesop's Fable story-line. It's folklore and an explanation on how "our Hungarian ancestors" came to be.

I'm not going to explain this in great detail as other reviewers did. It's a short story and it has many illustrations and it is worth picking up or checking out at your library.
  • I ordered this book for my child's book report. I was worried that it would take too long to get to my house and that there would not be enough time to read the book and write the report. I couldn't believe how quickly the book arrived--just a couple of days. I was very impressed with the speed of delivery and the book was in excellent shape. Although it was a used book the book seller described it perfectly and it did not look like it had ever been touched. It looked perfectly new. If this book seller (JJ's Book Nook) can continue to operate like this I would give them a 100% satisfaction score. The book itself was a historical novel. It was less than 100 pages, but a lot of information was placed in this book. It can be read on several levels from child to adult. On the adult level, the author tells about some very specific historical events and puts them in a proper context that was very interesting. A child would not know about any of these events and some knowledge of history is necessary to fully understand the merits of the book. It basically told about the founding of the country of Hungry and some of the myths associated with a few historical facts. The combination made for a good read for both child and adult. Reading about the myths would be fun reading for children and the historical context of the story was interesting reading for adults.
  • Great books by a great author! Our 10-11 year old daughter loves these and asks for more!
  • As promised, this is a wonderfully magical story of adventure, growth, and faith. The imagery in the storytelling caught me up, as if I were sitting around the table listening to my father tell stories of his childhood. I never doubted, in either case, that every word was true.
  • I bought this book because my Mother read it to me when I was very young, the first of many books by this author. It brought back wonderful memories of a wonderful time spent with my Mom at my bedtime. She enjoyed the book too.
  • Nothing more to say
  • Fabulous fable about the Magyar and Hungarian people. Loved it. Made me want to read more by Kate Seredy.

Talons of Power Wings of Fire Book 9 Tui T Sutherland 9780545685436 Books Reviews

  • No words can explain how I am feeling! The ending was such a surprise, that when the last book comes out, I don't even know how much drama there will be! I definitely recommend this book for animal and action book lovers. Definitely buy this. It's a must read. Can't wait to see what happens in the final book!
  • This is an amazing book with adventure, mystery, and has just a hint of romance to tie it all together. The book is told from Turtle's perpective which gives us another look at the world. I recommend this book to any Wings of Fire fan. You will not be disappointed.
  • This book has everything I expected, and more! While I can't say I approve of the ending, everything else was great. At first I was a little wary of Turtle. He was afraid of everything, seemingly even his own shadow. But as the book progressed, he changed into the confident, mature character I was expecting. I also got to know Anemone better too, along with Kinkajou. Sadly, Moon, Winter, Qibli, Peril, and the other Dragonets of Destiny weren't in it all that much, but hopefully will be in the next book The Darkness Of Dragons. Overall, I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy, or to other Wings of Fire fans.
  • This was a good continuation of the Wings of Fire series. The book was easy to read and progresses into the next part of the Darkstalker story arc. There was a stand alone Darkstalker book released that explains Darkstalker’s history and it would be helpful to read that book before reading this one. I continue to read this series mostly because my 10 year old son enjoys it so much; I have also become somewhat attached to these dragons myself.

This continues the storyline with Darkstalker's awakening and really focuses on animus dragons. The story is told from Turtle’s perspective; he is a SeaWing dragon that is an animus in secret. He alone seems to be immune to Darkstalker’s charm and it is up to him to discern what Darkstalker is really up to.

There isn't a lot resolved in this story, it is basically just the start of another broad storyline involving Darkstalker and his efforts to rebuild the Nightwing Clan and gain the trust of the other Dragon Clans. We learn some more about Turtle’s history and past, but honestly not a ton happens in here. Mostly this book seems to be setting up the story for more excitement in future books. There is a sense of doom over the whole story as you are just waiting for things to go really wrong in the next book.

Overall this was a good continuation of this series. I liked learning more about animus dragons and it was interesting to see things from Turtle's perspective. However I felt like this was a very short book and not a lot actually happened in here. I am curious to see what this book builds to as the series continues. Recommended to fans of the Wings of Fire series.
  • This book was so good. I like how this one and Darkness of Dragons work together so well. The funniest part in the book by far to me is when the Icewings see Darkstalker in the library and shriek loud enough to break glass. Anyway good book, Turtle is one of my favorite characters along with Winter, Qibli. Moon, Peril, Pike, Hailstorm, Mightyclaws, Prince Arctic (although Arctic doesn't officially appear in this book) and many others. Now like other reviewers I also have to caution parents with young children about this series, but don't let it stop you from reading these books because they are very good. Well worth the money. I recommend this series to anyone who wishes for a good page turner.
  • I work third shift and actually stayed awake until the mail came so I could start reading this book. I can always tell I will like a book within a few pages, and I am not even through the prologue and already it is way better the "Darkstalker." I would have kept reading it if I had not had to work.
  • I have been reading this series as a bedtime story to my son (who is 8), and I enjoy reading them as much as he enjoys hearing them. He first picked this series out from a book form from his school about 6 months ago (we got the box set with the first 5 books). As soon as we had finished the box set, I started my search online for the rest of them. Now we are almost done with this one and he's already asking when the next book is going to be out!
  • My daughter has been reading the series and really enjoys it. After she finished the 8th book, she couldn't wait to begin reading the next book in the series. The 9th book arrived on time and as with the previous books in the series, my daughter loved it.

Dick Bong Ace of Aces eBook George C Kenney Reviews

  • Kenny wrote the history of the air war in the Pacific. That is a pretty good fast over view. This is just a spin off for extra money. Buy Air War in the Pacific The Journal of General George Kenney, Commander of the Fifth U.S. Air Force it includes this sufficiently.
  • An exciting tale and a decent book about Richard Bong the Fighter pilot of WWII. The text flows well and it makes for a good story, like a movie script. Details of his exploits are short, probably as his after action reports were the same.
  • Enjoyable read interesting look into a small portion of the life of a fighter ace. If you're ever in the area of superior Wisconsin take in the bong memorial museum nice little museum and awesome volunteers from the American legion add to the experience.
  • A very good book ,short an factual , highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the sw Pacific theatre of operations in ww2
  • Great easy read. A very well told story of Maj Dick Bong, WWII top ace. Throughout enjoyed. Highly recommend this book.
  • A great story about an American hero. A surprising ending!
This was truly the greatest generation. They deserve the glory accorded.
  • Fascinating info regarding military aviation in WW2
  • General Kenney has written several books about the war in the Pacific and this is one of his best. It's a great tribute to one of America's greatest hero's.

Blind Date with a Billionaire Biker Blind Date Disasters Book 3 edition by Evangeline Kelly Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • This book was a unique twist in the billionaire romance genre. Not only did it have an interesting plot but a great message about faith, stereotypes and overcoming personal issues.
Tirzah comes from an ultra-conservative upbringing where marriages are arranged and parents are to be obeyed. Her life is thrown into a tizzy (which becomes her nickname in our story) when through unexpected circumstances she is sent to live with a previously unknown grandfather who just happens to be the leader of a biker club. There her faith clashes with her grandfather Carl’s beliefs which shower people with grace, acceptance and love. Through him she meets Dex who shatters her stereotypes and helps introduce her to a God who is not a tyrant. What about all the rules? Can she really have more than the expectations she’s had since childhood?
Dex was rejected by his billionaire father and always saw himself as a failure. Through Carl’s club, now his family, he’s found what was missing. He no longer seeks escape through drugs or other means. He now has a mission—to reach out to the lost and hurting, yet the wound left by his dad has never healed. Can he forgive his father? As he wrestles with his dad’s effort to reconcile he meets Carl’s granddaughter, a woman he saved three years earlier from a riot and never forgot. His life just got a lot more interesting.
Can Dex and Tirzah move beyond their obvious differences and find the real love they both need? Will her parents and his past get in the way?
  • This was an excellent book that pulled me in from the beginning and didn't let go until the end. Tirzah comes from a very conservative home and church. She has to make decisions about what she believes in and how she will live her life. In the midst of figuring things out, she was told that her life is in danger and she will need to live with her biological grandfather. She finds a new life and freedom that she has never known. She must make a choice about how she wants to live. Tirzah must also figure out how to continue to honor her parents without bowing to their wishes. Dex is a reformed biker that lives his life for Christ. That alone is a contradiction, yet he is also the sole heir to a billion-dollar company. Dex must learn forgiveness and reconcile with his father. I love the characters and what they had to struggle with. I liked that they came from different backgrounds and were so attracted to each other. The chemistry between the couple was amazing. Once again the author did an amazing job of making the characters mature before they were ready to be a part of a relationship. This was an amazing book that I would love to read again and again. I recommend this book to anyone that loves opposite attract, inspirational romance.
I received a copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
  • Blind Date With a Billionaire Biker is a wonderful, inspirational romance. The story is unique - definitely not the usual billionaire fare. The characters are extremely well written. I loved Tizzy's grandfather and the rest of the bikers who rode to bring Christ to people. Tizzy and Dex are great together. Once I started the story ,I could not put the book down. I highly recommend this book.
  • Romance, clean; strong Christian faith elements
Definitely strong Christian faith elements. Tizzy's story was interesting. She and Dex had an interesting fall. The first few chapters felt kind of stilted, and slow, but after that the book was more readable. Perhaps because of the religious setting of her parents. The whole family dynamics were kind of flat with the forced relationships and parental posturing.
Once Tizzy went to her grandfather's, the story read much more naturally. If I had only read the first few chapters, it would have been a 2, but more of a 2.5 for me as a reader. This was more of a religious message book than a romance? They were a cute, sincere, couple so rounded up higher to a 3. If you don't like Christian faith books, it definitely isn't for you. I loved Tank and Dex and the other bikers. They were genuine, honest and real. Rounded up for those characters and that setting.
  • I loved that the main characters leaned on their faith and encouraged each other to pray about their concerns before making decisions.
I loved that Dex and Tank were honorable men that kept their promises.
  • Wow what a profound story. I could relate in so many ways. Being raised in a conservative home, I could relate to the no pants, no room for error in the church. I could even relate to the drug issues. It's sad that Tirzah's father had to hide his weakness from the church and couldn't even look to the church for prayer. Unfortunately it happens in so many churches because they are full of judgmental people. Thank the Lord there are also churches that have compassion and help people when they are faced with everyday life issues. Tirzah and Dex were a beautiful couple even when it looked like the odds were against them. I loved Tirzah's grandfather and I think all of us could learn something from him. The dialogue kept switching from the h to the H, but that did distract from the story. Would recommend for all ages.
  • This story started off with a bang, and never slowed down! The characters were so relatable. Their struggles and accomplishments had me crying and cheering. I found the lessons of acceptance of others so poignant. I loved the scripture references and the faith journey the many characters experienced.
The romance was tender, and clean, though slightly unbelievable at times. I appreciated that the physical intimacy was so Disney.
On a steaminess level I would rate this a pleasant G.
  • God never looks at the outside. He sees the heart and can transform anybody from the inside out. He also provides all we need to be happy and fulfilled.

Marrakech is the heart and lifeblood of Morocco's ancient storytelling tradition. For nearly a thousand years, storytellers have gathered in the Jemaa el Fna, the legendary square of the city, to recount ancient folktales and fables to rapt audiences. But this unique chain of oral tradition that has passed seamlessly from generation to generation is teetering on the brink of extinction. The competing distractions of television, movies and the internet have drawn the crowds away from the storytellers and few have the desire to learn the stories and continue their legacy. Richard Hamilton has witnessed at first hand the death throes of this rich and captivating tradition and, in the labyrinth of the Marrakech medina, has tracked down the last few remaining storytellers, recording stories that are replete with the mysteries and beauty of the Maghreb.

The Last Storytellers Tales from the Heart of Morocco Richard Hamilton Barnaby Rogerson Books Reviews

  • "The Last Storytellers" is a collection of 37 oral tales from five storytellers in the main marketplace in Marrakesh. They were collected by BBC Correspondent Richard Hamilton between 2006 and 2009 and cleaned up and are now presented in written form for your amusement.

The stories cover a lot of ground, from literary tales to fantasies, and some of them are a lot like Western tales (like a Cinderella story) while others feel much more like the Middle East. Many of the stories are quite short, just a few pages, though there are some longer tales as well. A number of the stories are quite grisly, so they would not make appropriate reading to children, though most would. If you're going to read these tales to children it would behoove you to read ahead to pick appropriate stories.

Hamilton said in an interview that his translator had sketchy English skills and that he had to clean up the stories a good bit, and I have to say that the tales as they are presented are quite smooth and well-told. That said, I am also reading "The Arabian Nights" right now, and I find the Nights to be better stories. They evoke more of a sense of wonder and have a sense of timing which Hamilton's tales do not do as well at. I also thought that Hamilton's tales give in to a malicious sense of justice a little too often (like an evil stepmom who is served the chopped-up body of her daughter for a snack) for my tastes.

Overall, however, Hamilton's stories are an enjoyable read and serve as an excellent introduction to the current oral storytelling in Marrakech. I often found myself chuckling as I read these stories, and I finished the collection with the feeling of having learned something about the state of modern Arab storytelling, which was valuable in itself. For the most part these are stories in the classical tradition, Once Upon A Time-type tales, and they hold up well to the modern reader. They are a good companion to "The Arabian Nights" and an enjoyable read. Get them, and enjoy!
  • I bought this book prior to a trip to Morocco but it didn't arrive until I had returned. In the end this was the best result as I'd traveled to many of the places featured in these stories so reading the ancient tales meant so much more to me. The riding (mostly translations of ancient stories) is like putting a hot knife through butter...effortless and easy. I've already read the book twice and will read again before returning to Morocco.
  • I loved The Last Storytellers a collection of wonderful traditional tales with the usual cast of innocent maidens, love lorn viziers, shepherds, djinns, holes in the ground and so on and so forth.
I used to watch the storytellers by Cafe France in Djemma elFna when we lived in Marrakesh--and now I know what they were saying.
These stories are elegantly translated and read beautifully --they obviously would read well aloud to all ages!
The world of A Thousand and One Nights meets the world of Grimm.
    Terrific stuff.
  • Some stories are wonderful, especially since I spent some time in Marrakech. Some are a bit strange. Overall this is a great book of folk tales from a very, very old oral tradition.
  • A bit too much background before a wonderful series of local stories, tales and ballads. Great selection of stories.
  • This book took into a voyage on the back of a magic carpet to a wonderful place called Morocco. Where fantasy, Djinns, Sultan, Beauty, Love, Betray, Sorecellerie, Good and Bad lived all together.... This book presents great stories, meaningful and full of morals. This is definitely a must read for those who love to travel to a magic place and experience different tales......I simply enjoyed reading these fairytales, and i ceratinly didn't want to come back from that magic world!!!
  • Fascinating collection of traditional Moroccan tales, each one more enchanting than the last. I couldn't put the book down, and am ready to start reading it again.
  • A great history of storytelling. The stories are interesting.
